recycling matters

Redefining waste to be a sustainable resource.

Australia is at a turning point. We have some of the most incredible natural resources on the planet, but the way we use them needs to change if we want to protect them for future generations.

Moving toward a circular economy – where waste is minimized, materials are reused, and sustainability is built into every stage of production – isn't just a nice idea. It's essential.

Right now, Australia’s circularity rate sits at around 4.6%, well below the global average. We also have one of the highest material footprints per person in the world, which means we use and waste more resources than we should. The good news? There's huge potential to turn this around. With smart policies, better recycling systems, and businesses leading the charge in innovative waste solutions, we can shift from a throwaway culture to one that values resources and makes the most of what we already have.

REAL CHANGE

This transition isn't just about the environment.

This is a massive economic opportunity. Investing in circular industries can create jobs, boost local manufacturing, and make Australia more self-sufficient. Companies are already stepping up, from advanced e-waste recyclers to businesses finding new ways to turn used materials into high-quality products.

The government has set ambitious goals, including doubling our circularity rate by 2035. But goals alone won’t get us there – we need action. That means designing products that last, making recycling easier and more effective, and ensuring businesses have the right incentives to prioritize sustainability.

Australia has everything it takes to be a leader in this space. Our natural resources are too valuable to waste, and with the right approach, we can build a system that protects them while strengthening our economy. The future is circular – it’s time to make it happen.
